LAS VEGAS (Jan. 10, 2013) – Move over Monet, The Mirage Hotel & Casino’s family of bottlenose dolphins are not only making splashes in the water, but also on canvas. Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat is now offering “Painting with the Dolphins,” a hands-on experience where guests can collaborate with dolphins in producing unique masterpieces of art.
In addition to providing participants with a fresh and unforgettable experience, interactive programs such as “Painting with the Dolphins” allows for deeper connections and relationships to form between the animals and their trainers. New activities for the animals create an enriching environment and ensure a higher quality of life.
“Our primary goal at the Dolphin Habitat is to ensure the highest quality of care, which includes high levels of physical and mental stimulation for the animals each and every day,” said Philip Admire, curator of dolphin care at The Mirage. “Our ‘Painting with the Dolphins’ program creates another avenue to mentally challenge and engage our dolphins with their trainers while providing guests with an unforgettable experience.”
Participants of this once-in-a-lifetime experience begin with a brief orientation and overview of the habitat where they observe these beautiful marine mammals up close and personal while learning about dolphin health and behaviors. Following a brief overview of the painting process, guests choose the background colors for their canvas, or have the option of leaving it white for higher contrast. The participant then chooses three paint colors from a vibrant palette of colors.
The painting session begins with the trainer dipping a brush into the first color and then allowing the dolphin to begin illustrating. The dolphin-friendly paintbrushes used in the program are placed inside buoys so the dolphins can hold them safely in their mouths. Each dolphin has its own method of painting, so no two canvases will look alike ensuring that each creation is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
Once the painting has dried, participants are presented with the finished portrait, certificate of authenticity and a souvenir photo. “Painting with the Dolphins” takes place twice daily at 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and is limited to two people per session. The program is open to participants eight years of age and older. Tickets are $199 per person and are available at the Dolphin Habitat ticket booth or by calling (702) 792-7889. Trainer for a Day guests may also upgrade or add on the “Painting with the Dolphins” program for an additional $100. A variety of one of a kind dolphin artwork is also available for purchase in the Dolphin Shop.
