LAS VEGAS – Reflecting the exotic romance of the tropics, The Mirage is home to Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. While providing enjoyment for guests, the habitat also serves as an educational center for guests and school children in the Las Vegas community.
The Secret Garden
In the Secret Garden, Siegfried & Roy reveal their most cherished and well-guarded secret: the world’s most exotic animals can live side by side with one another and with mankind.
Through the Secret Garden, Siegfried & Roy seek to renew the public’s sense of responsibility to preserve nature. The haven represents what is possible when humans and animals work, play and share their lives together.
Five rare animal breeds reside within the Secret Garden: the Royal White Tigers of Nevada, the White Lions of Timbavati, heterozygous Bengal tigers (possessing both tawny and white genes), a panther and a snow leopard. “Shelters no longer exist in the wild for these beautiful creatures,” Roy explains.
Siegfried adds, “Here at the Secret Garden, we have created a safe home for these animals. We believe in our hearts that when any species vanishes from this earth, all of us are in some way diminished.”
The Dolphin Habitat
The dolphin environment is home to a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and is the culmination of a dream to develop a tropical oasis in the desert for one of the world’s most graceful animals.
The purpose and intent of The Mirage dolphin facility is twofold: to provide a healthy and nurturing environment for dolphins and to increase public awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving marine mammals and their environments.
Specialists from around the world were asked to lend their expertise and ideas in order to create a safe, healthy and state-of-the-art facility. The size of the pools exceeds government regulations by more than eight times.
To help generate awareness while providing an experience of a lifetime, The Mirage launched Trainer for a Day. This program provides guests with the unforgettable opportunity to work side by side with animal experts in the daily care and training of dolphins. The program is limited to four people each day and is available to everyone 13 years of age or older.
Another educational program, developed by The Mirage animal care staff and the Clark County School District, provides students with an opportunity to visit the Dolphin Habitat and learn about the mammals. Visitors also learn about the fragility of the planet’s marine ecology. In addition, the Dolphin Habitat regularly offers community outreach programs such as lectures, workshops and special events.
