Magicians of the Century Add to Legacy with New 'Ambassadors of Conservation'
LAS VEGAS - August 13, 2010 - The Mirage introduced its newest additions, two 7-week-old, white-striped tiger cubs, to Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat this week. Guests can see these rare and adorable cubs in a special nursery created just for them.
The sibling brothers, Mohan and Majestic, were born June 22 and weighed approximately two pounds each at birth. Their mother and father, part of Siegfried & Roy's breeding program, are carriers of the rare recessive gene necessary to produce white offspring. The cubs were brought to the Secret Garden in an effort to support Siegfried & Roy's never-ending quest of conservation and their lifelong dedication to saving these magnificent white tigers for future generations of mankind to enjoy and cherish.
"Mohan and Majestic, our newest 'Ambassadors of Conservation,' play an important role in helping us achieve our goal to preserve and protect these rare and beautiful animals," Roy said. "We can't stress enough the importance of maintaining strong genetic lines, and these cubs add new, established genetic markers to our collaborative breeding efforts. We are pleased to share these magical creatures with the world."
Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at The Mirage is an exotic, enchanting world where guests come face to face with the Royal White Tigers of Nevada, the White Lions of Timbavati, gold heterozygous tigers, leopards, panthers and a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.
Daily nursery hours for the tiger cubs are 11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and are subject to change. Admission prices are $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 4 - 12. Children three and under are free. For additional information and hours of operation, visit www.mirage.com or call (702) 791-7188.
Java was born on Wednesday November 19th, 2008. This adorable male leopard cub is the off spring of two adult leopards living in the habitat, Asabi and Mu-gamba. This is the second litter from this pair, all of which still reside in the luscious Secret Garden.
Leopards weigh approximately one pound at birth, although males can reach a weight of up to 200 pounds at maturity, with a life expectancy of 15 - 20 years. Typically cubs will nurse from the mother for the first three weeks, after that they are switched over to bottle feeding and now Java is eating solid food right on schedule. Java is being tentatively cared for in the Secret Garden Nursery where he can be seen daily.
All leopard subspecies are either endangered or threatened. The U.S. Endangered Species Act and the Commission on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) both make and effort to protect leopards as do the wildlife parks in their home countries. Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat is home to six leopards; one Snow Leopard, and one Black Panther, all of which are endangered species.

The Mirage Announces Name of Dolphin Calf
LAS VEGAS – Bella, a healthy dolphin calf, is swimming her way into the hearts of guests and staff alike at The Mirage. The energetic calf was born Saturday, Sept. 6, to Huf n Puf, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. With this new addition, three generations of dolphins are represented at the resort.
Shortly after the delivery, the calf swam to the water’s surface and took her first breath. The calf has quickly taken to her surroundings; she is nursing well and is closely following her mother around the habitat and bonding with her.
After the successful birth, The Mirage held an employee contest to name the youngster.Out of more than 600 entries, Bella was the winning name submitted by Tony Christopher, front services attendant. Christopher and a guest will enjoy The Mirage’s Dolphin Trainer for a Day Program as the prize for the creative suggestion.
“I had a difficult time selecting just one name from the imaginative choices provided by our employees,” said Scott Sibella, president and COO of The Mirage. “Their enthusiasm was evident. Ultimately I decided on Bella because I felt it best suited the young calf. Bella is Italian for ‘beautiful’ and she certainly is that.”
David Blasko, director of Animal Care at The Mirage, said, “Everyone at The Mirage is thrilled about Bella and how well she appears to be doing. There are several milestones we must pass in the coming weeks and months, but we remain cautiously optimistic that we have a healthy new member of our aquatic family.”
As dolphin calves remain very delicate through their entire first year of life, the Animal Care staff will continue to monitor the calf as she continues bonding with her mother, nursing and testing her independence.
Huf n Puf, a first-time mother who was born at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat in March 2000, and Bella are in the Birthing and Research pool, which is open to public viewing during regular operational hours of the facility. Alongside the new mother and calf are Huf n Puf’s mother, Duchess, and Duchess’ son, Sgt. Pepper, who was born June 8, 2007. Duchess is at her daughter’s side, a natural occurrence in female dolphin pods in the wild, to assist and coach in the care of the newest addition to the family. The calf’s father, Lightning, is located in another pool within the facility.
The Dolphin Habitat at The Mirage is accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, an international association dedicated to the highest standards of care for marine mammals and to their conservation in the wild through public education, scientific study and wildlife presentations.
